Does AI Search Mean My Business Doesn’t Need a Website?

No. If anything, AI search makes your website more important, not less. Let me explain why.

The Short Answer

More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google’s AI Overviews for recommendations instead of typing a search into Google and scrolling through the results. That’s led a lot of business owners to wonder if a website is still worth having.

It is. Your website is usually where AI tools get their information about your business from in the first place. Without one, there’s nothing for them to find, and nothing for them to recommend.

This post is part of a series on AI search. If you haven’t read our original overview, AI Search: Is It Such a Big Deal? it’s a good place to start.

Where Do AI Answers Actually Come From?

When someone asks an AI tool a question like “who’s a good joiner in Beverley”, the AI doesn’t know the answer off the top of its head. It builds the answer by pulling information from around the web: business websites, directory listings, social media, and reviews.

Your website is usually the fullest, most detailed, and most current source of information about what you do, where you do it, and who you do it for. AI tools weigh that heavily when deciding who to mention.

Why Your Website Is Still the Source AI Relies On

Take that joiner in Beverley. Someone asks an AI assistant which joiner they should use for a kitchen fitting job nearby. For the AI to recommend one business over another, it needs a source that tells it what the business does, who it’s for, and why it’s a good fit. That source is very often the website.

Take the website away, and the AI has one less, and usually the best, reason to mention that business at all. A competitor with an up-to-date site is the one it will reach for instead.

What Changes: Fewer Clicks, Same (or More) Value

Here’s the part that catches people out. Even when your website is the reason you get mentioned, the person asking the question might never click through to visit it. They get their answer, including your business name, straight from the AI. That can look like your website “isn’t working”, when actually it’s doing exactly what you want: getting your business put forward as the answer.

Judge this differently to a normal Google click. Being recommended by name is the win here, even if it doesn’t always show up as a visit in your website statistics. Some of those recommendations will still turn into a visit to your site, a follow on LinkedIn, or a phone call. If you want the fuller picture of how people find their way to you, we cover this in How Do I Get Visitors to My Website?

Do You Still Need to Rank on Google Too?

Yes. Traditional Google search hasn’t gone away, and a lot of people still use it, sometimes for the same query they’d ask an AI tool. On top of that, Google’s own results now include AI Overviews built from the same kind of source material.

The work of getting your website into good shape for standard SEO and the work of getting it noticed by AI overlaps almost entirely. You’re not choosing between the two — see SEO: What Should I Be Focusing On? for where to start.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a Website

If you don’t have a website, AI tools have far less to go on. They may still find you through directories, social media or reviews, but that’s a thinner and less reliable picture of your business than a well-written website would give them. In practice, that usually means you’re recommended less often, and when a competitor’s website tells a fuller story than your directory listing does, they get chosen instead. If this sounds familiar, Why Does My Business Not Appear on Google? covers the same problem from the traditional search side.

What To Do Next

Most of what makes a website work well for AI search is the same as what makes it work well for regular SEO: clear, well-organised content that answers the questions your customers are actually asking, kept up to date. We’ll go through exactly how to do that in the next post in this series, covering how to structure your content so AI tools can use it properly.

For now, if you don’t have a website, or yours hasn’t been updated in a while, that’s the first thing to put right. If you’re weighing up the investment, How Much Does a Website Cost in the UK (2026)? is a good starting point.

FAQs

Can AI recommend my business if I don’t have a website?

It’s possible, if there’s enough information about you elsewhere online, but it’s much less likely and far less reliable than having your own website.

Will people still visit my website if AI answers their question for them?

Some will, some won’t. Being mentioned by name is valuable in its own right, even without a click, but a good number of people will still follow up with a visit, a search, or a call.

Do I need to change my website just for AI search?

Not from scratch. Most good SEO practice already helps with AI search too. There are a few extra things worth focusing on, which we’ll cover in the next post in this series.

How do I know if AI is already mentioning my business?

You can ask the AI tools directly with the kinds of questions your customers might use, or get a regular AI mention report that tracks this for you.

Is Google Search still worth optimising for?

Yes. Most people still use it, and Google’s own results increasingly draw on AI-generated summaries built from the same sources.
